COSMOLOGY
Contemporary cosmology is the quantitative (usually mathematical) study of the Universe in its totality, and sometimes, by philosophical extension, also consideration of humanity's place in the Universe. Though the word "cosmology" is relatively recent (first used in 1730), study of the Universe has a long history involving science, philosophy, and religion. As a scientific discipline, cosmology is a branch of physics with a strong connection to astrophysics.
